인간은 끊임없이 의미를 생산하고 목적을 부여하려 하지만, 세계는 언제나 그 기대를 초과하며 침묵한다. 카뮈에게 침묵은 결핍이 아니라 인간이 마주해야 하는 세계의 근원적 상태였다. 나는 이러한 침묵을 사라짐이나 부재가 아닌 존재가 머무는 또 다른 형식으로 바라본다.
얼음 속에 갇힌 화장품 용기들은 더 이상 본래의 기능을 수행하지 않는다. 아름다움을 생산하고 소비를 촉진하던 사물들은 차가운 시간 속에서 멈춰 선다. 그러나 그것들은 폐기되지도, 완전히 소멸하지도 않는다. 아감벤의 표현을 빌리자면, 그것들은 실현과 소멸 사이의 잠재적인 상태에 머문다.
나는 이 유예된 상태에 관심을 가진다. 얼음은 단순한 보존 장치가 아니다. 그것은 시간을 지연시키고 기능을 정지시키며 사물을 소비의 질서 밖으로 이동시키는 매개체이다. 얼음이 녹는 동안 사물은 인간이 부여한 목적에서 벗어나 물질 자체의 시간 안으로 들어간다.
이 작업에서 중요한 것은 완성된 형태가 아니라 변화의 과정이다. 균열이 생기고, 물방울이 떨어지고, 형태가 붕괴되는 순간마다 사물은 새로운 상태로 이동한다. 나는 그 과정을 통해 인간 중심의 시간과 가치 체계로부터 벗어난 존재의 가능성을 탐구하고자 한다.
침묵은 끝이 아니다. 그것은 아직 드러나지 않은 가능성이 머무는 공간이며, 존재가 다른 모습으로 나타나기 전의 시간이다.
This work begins with the philosophical reflections of Albert Camus on the absurd condition of human existence and Giorgio Agamben’s concept of potentiality.
Human beings constantly seek meaning and assign purpose to the world, yet the world often remains silent. For Camus, silence was not a lack of meaning but a fundamental condition of existence itself. I approach silence not as absence, but as another mode of being.
The cosmetic containers trapped within ice no longer perform their original functions. Objects once designed to produce beauty and stimulate consumption are suspended within a frozen state. Yet they are neither discarded nor destroyed. They remain in a condition between use and disappearance. Borrowing from Agamben, they exist as potentialities—states that have not yet been fully realized or exhausted.
My interest lies in this suspended condition. Ice is not merely a material of preservation. It delays time, interrupts function, and temporarily removes objects from the cycle of consumption. As the ice slowly melts, these objects enter a different temporality—one that is no longer governed by human utility or economic value.
The work is therefore not about a fixed form, but about transformation. Cracks emerge, water drips, structures collapse, and matter continuously shifts into new states. Through this process, I explore the possibility of existence beyond human-centered systems of meaning and value.
Silence is not an ending. It is a space where unrealized possibilities remain, a threshold where existence waits to appear in another form.
